The Lord's Judgment on Those Who Mock His People's Fall
The Lord judges those who gloat over His people's chastening, proving that even foreign nations must answer to His holiness and sovereign rule.
Scripture Text
25:1 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
25:2 “Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites and prophesy against them.
25:3 Tell the Ammonites to hear the word of the Lord God, for this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you exclaimed, “Aha!” when My sanctuary was profaned, when the land of Israel was laid waste, and when the house of Judah went into exile,
25:4 Therefore I will indeed give you as a possession to the people of the East. They will set up their camps and pitch their tents among you. They will eat your fruit and drink your milk.
25:5 I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels, and Ammon a resting place for sheep. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’
25:6 For this is what the Lord God says: ‘Because you clapped your hands and stomped your feet and rejoiced over the land of Israel with a heart full of contempt,
25:7 Therefore I will indeed stretch out My hand against you and give you as plunder to the nations. I will cut you off from the peoples and exterminate you from the countries. I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the Lord.’
Anchor
The Lord judges those who gloat over His people's chastening, proving that even foreign nations must answer to His holiness and sovereign rule.
The nations surrounding Israel are not morally neutral observers of Jerusalem's fall; Ammon's malicious joy over Judah's covenant judgment places Ammon under the Lord's righteous judgment.
Point of Contact
This passage presses God's people to reject the ugly satisfaction that rises when enemies, rivals, or compromised communities fall. It also comforts the chastened people of God: the Lord's discipline of His own does not mean He has surrendered His honor or abandoned justice among the nations.
Rhythm
- The Word of the LORD Turns Toward Ammon The prophet is commanded to set his face against the Ammonites and speak the Lord's judgment oracle.
- Ammon's Sin of Contemptuous Rejoicing Ammon said 'Aha' over the profaned sanctuary, the devastated land of Israel, and Judah's exile.
- The LORD Hands Ammon Over to the People of the East Ammon's territory, including Rabbah, will be given as a possession and turned into a place for encampments and flocks.
- Malice Answered by Divine Judgment Because Ammon rejoiced with hand, foot, and heart against Israel, the Lord will cut Ammon off so that they know He is the Lord.
Gospel Clarity
Ezekiel 25:1-7 exposes the holy God who judges both covenant rebellion and hostile malice. Human sin appears not only in direct disobedience but also in delighted contempt when others fall. The gospel answers this need in Christ, who bore judgment without malice toward His enemies, entrusted vengeance to God, and opens mercy to Jews and Gentiles who repent and trust Him. Believers therefore renounce revenge, refuse cruel joy, and wait for the Lord who judges justly.
