1 Corinthians 15:54-57
Through Christ’s resurrection, death is defeated and believers share in His victory.
54 But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
55 “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through Christ’s resurrection, death is defeated and believers share in His victory.
Paul celebrates the final victory over death that will occur when believers are clothed with immortality through the resurrection secured by Christ.
These verses represent the triumphant climax of Paul's resurrection argument in 1 Corinthians 15. After explaining the necessity and nature of resurrection transformation, Paul celebrates the ultimate defeat of death through Christ's redemptive work. The apostle draws from Old Testament prophetic promises to demonstrate that the resurrection fulfills God's long-declared plan to defeat death and restore life to His people.
Paul addresses the Corinthians' confusion about resurrection by emphasizing the ultimate defeat of death through Christ. In a culture where death was often viewed as an unavoidable and final reality, the Christian proclamation of resurrection represented a radical declaration of divine victory.
Christ Is Risen, the Dead Will Be Raised, and Death Will Be Destroyed
Because Christ has been bodily raised from the dead as the firstfruits of his people, believers will also be raised, death itself will be defeated, and therefore Christian faith, holiness, suffering, and labor are meaningful and steadfast in the Lord.
