Jeremiah 17:9-10 (WEB)

9 The heart is deceitful above all things and it is exceedingly corrupt. Who can know it?

10 “I, Yahweh, search the mind. I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.”

Central Idea

Because the human heart is deceptive, only God can rightly discern motives and judge human actions.

Authorial Intent

To reveal the deceptive nature of the human heart and affirm that the LORD alone searches the heart and judges every person according to their conduct.

Literary Context

Jeremiah 17:9–10 follows the contrast between those who trust in human strength and those who trust in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:5–8). The prophet now explains why misplaced trust occurs: the human heart itself is fundamentally deceptive. This insight prepares the reader for the continuing tension throughout Jeremiah’s message, where the people repeatedly claim innocence while their true condition remains spiritually corrupted. The passage also anticipates later promises in Jeremiah that God will transform the human heart through a new covenant work.

Chapter: Jeremiah 17

The Engraved Sin, the Deceitful Heart, and the Sabbath Test

Judah's sin is engraved on the heart and altar, but the LORD searches the heart, blesses those who trust him, heals those who seek him, and tests covenant loyalty through concrete obedience such as Sabbath holiness.
