The northern campaign reaches the coalition's political center, and Hazor's prominence does not shield it from the conquest judgment.

Understanding the Big Idea

Joshua turns back to Hazor, kills its king, and burns the leading city of the northern coalition. Hazor receives a distinct fate within the larger campaign.

This passage does not directly proclaim the gospel. It records severe covenant judgment in Israel's conquest. Under the new covenant, the church is not commissioned to burn cities or destroy populations. Jesus Christ sends His people to make disciples, love enemies, proclaim reconciliation, and entrust final judgment to God. Hazor's fall contributes to the Bible's witness that proud human power is finite before divine judgment, while the gospel announces mercy in Christ before the final judgment.

To show that the defeat of the northern coalition is followed by judgment on its leading royal center, with Hazor singled out for capture, royal execution, total destruction, and burning.

Joshua 11:6-9 records the LORD's promise of victory, Joshua's sudden attack at the Waters of Merom, the defeat of the northern coalition, and Joshua's obedience regarding the horses and chariots. Joshua 11:10-11 then turns to Hazor itself, the coalition's leading royal center. Joshua 11:12-15 next broadens the view to the other royal cities and emphasizes Joshua's obedience to what the LORD had commanded Moses.

The field coalition has been defeated, and the campaign now turns against Hazor itself.
