Hidden Covenant Breach Provokes the Lord's Anger

Hidden sin within God's covenant people is not hidden from the LORD, and private disobedience can have consequences far beyond the individual offender.

Understanding the Big Idea

Before the Ai battle, the narrator reveals that Israel has broken faith over devoted things through Achan's taking. Corporate anger frames the coming defeat before the characters understand it.

Joshua 7:1 exposes the seriousness of sin before a holy God and the reality of divine wrath, but it does not itself explain the gospel. The New Testament reveals that all people are sinners and that God's wrath is just, while also proclaiming that Jesus Christ bears judgment for those who trust Him and provides justification by grace. Christian readers should therefore hear the warning against hidden sin while locating final hope not in concealment, communal reputation, or self-purification, but in confession, repentance, and the saving work of Christ.

To alert the reader before the Ai episode that Israel's apparent post-Jericho momentum has been compromised by covenant unfaithfulness: Achan has taken from the devoted things, and the LORD's anger now rests against Israel.

Joshua 6 ends with Jericho under judgment, devoted property reserved for the LORD, Joshua's curse on rebuilding the city, and the LORD's presence with Joshua. Joshua 7:1 abruptly reveals that Israel has violated the command concerning the devoted things through Achan's action. Joshua 7:2-5 then proceeds to the Ai campaign, where Israel suffers an unexpected defeat before the hidden cause has been publicly identified.

Israel is in Canaan immediately after the victory at Jericho and before the attempted attack on Ai.
