Judges 13:8-10

Manoah Prays and the Angel Returns to His Wife

Manoah asks for help raising the promised boy, and the angel returns to the woman.

Judges 13:8-10 (BSB)

8Then Manoah prayed to the LORD, “Please, O Lord, let the man of God You sent us come to us again to teach us how to raise the boy who is to be born.”

9And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God returned to the woman as she was sitting in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her.

10The woman ran quickly to tell her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has reappeared!”

Historical Context

The second appearance happens in a field where Manoah's wife is sitting; Manoah is not with her at first.

Literary Context

The woman has just recounted the original message (13:6-7). Manoah's request is for teaching about the child, and the narrator reports that God hears it. In 13:11-14 Manoah reaches the visitor and asks his questions; no new instructions are yet given in these three verses.

What is the big idea of Judges 13:8-10?

Manoah asks for help raising the promised boy, and the angel returns to the woman.

Understanding the Big Idea

Manoah asks the Lord to send the man of God again to teach them how to care for the coming boy. God listens, and the angel returns to Manoah's wife while she is in the field and he is absent. She runs to tell him of the renewed appearance, making their meeting possible.

Authorial Intent

To show Manoah seeking instruction, the Lord hearing him, and the renewed appearance coming again through the woman.

How does Judges 13:8-10 point to Christ?

The Lord's attentiveness to a request for guidance is part of this birth narrative. The saving gospel remains Christ's death for sins and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), not a formula for receiving a messenger on demand.

Questions for Reflection

  1. What does Manoah ask the Lord to send and teach?
  2. How does the narrator describe God's response?
  3. To whom does the angel reappear?
  4. Where is Manoah at that moment?
  5. How does his wife bring him into the scene?

Chapter: Judges 13

Samson's Birth Announced: Consecration Before Deliverance

Judges 13 shows that when Israel has grown passive under oppression, the LORD begins deliverance by sovereign grace, raising a consecrated child from barrenness before His people even cry out.
