Leviticus 19:1-4
God’s people are called to reflect His holiness through obedient and exclusive devotion to Him.
1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2 “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.
3 “ ‘Each one of you shall respect his mother and his father. You shall keep my Sabbaths. I am Yahweh your God.
4 “ ‘Don’t turn to idols, nor make molten gods for yourselves. I am Yahweh your God.
God’s people are called to reflect His holiness through obedient and exclusive devotion to Him.
This passage establishes the foundational command for Israel to be holy as the LORD is holy, expressed through reverence for parents, observance of Sabbaths, and exclusive loyalty to God.
Leviticus 19 opens a fresh and climactic section within the holiness material. After Leviticus 18 warned Israel not to imitate the sexual practices of Egypt and Canaan, Leviticus 19 broadens the call into a whole-life summons. The repeated formula, 'I am the LORD your God,' shows that every command rests on Yahweh's covenant identity. Verses 1-4 function as the theological gateway for the chapter: holiness flows from God's own holiness and is expressed in family order, sacred time, and exclusive worship.
Israel receives covenant instruction through Moses after the exodus and within the Sinai covenant framework. The whole Israelite community, not only priests, is addressed through Moses.
Be Holy Because I Am Holy: Covenant Life Before God and Neighbor
Because the LORD is holy, His redeemed people must embody holiness in worship, family, justice, mercy, speech, sexuality, work, land, neighbor-love, foreigner-love, and honest daily life.
