Gentle speech calms anger, but harsh words ignite it.

To teach that the tone and character of speech strongly influence whether conflict is calmed or intensified.

Proverbs 15 continues the sayings style that contrasts wise and foolish living through brief, memorable lines. This verse focuses on speech as a primary arena where wisdom or folly becomes visible. It follows a context where favor and shame under authority are in view (Proverbs 14:35) and immediately precedes a further contrast between the wise and the foolish use of the tongue (Proverbs 15:2). The proverb is framed as a general pattern of life under God’s moral order rather than a mechanical guarantee. It highlights the relational consequences of speech and assumes that anger and conflict are common realities that wisdom must address. The parallel lines set two paths before the reader: a restrained, gentle answer or a harsh word that provokes escalation.

Proverbs functions as Israel’s wisdom instruction, training covenant people to live skillfully under the LORD’s moral order in ordinary life, including the ethics of speech and conflict.
