The direction of a person's heart determines whether they pursue wisdom or feed on folly.
To contrast the inward orientation of the discerning heart, which seeks knowledge, with the mouth of fools that continually feeds on folly.
Proverbs 15 belongs to the collection of short sayings that repeatedly contrast wise and foolish patterns, especially in the realm of speech, inner disposition, and relational life. The immediate neighborhood (15:13–15) keeps attention on how the inner person (“heart”) shapes outward experience and expression. Verse 14 uses parallel lines to show a deep divide in orientation: one line focuses on the heart’s pursuit, the other on the mouth’s feeding. The proverb’s imagery assumes that desires are trained by what we habitually take in and give out. In this section, the reader is taught to evaluate not merely outcomes but the ongoing direction of the inner life.
Proverbs presents wisdom instruction for covenant life, training the community to live skillfully in reverence toward the LORD. The sayings assume that moral formation occurs through repeated choices, desires, and speech patterns, and they address everyday life where the inner person becomes visible in habits and words.
