Proverbs 15:31
Those who listen to life-giving correction dwell among the wise.
31 The ear that listens to reproof lives, and will be at home among the wise.
Those who listen to life-giving correction dwell among the wise.
To teach that those who receive and listen to corrective instruction position themselves among the wise.
Proverbs 15 continues a series of short sayings contrasting wisdom and folly, especially as they are revealed through speech, instruction, and response to correction. The chapter repeatedly ties outcomes (life, peace, honor) to the posture of the inner person and the use of words. Verse 31 highlights the “ear” as a symbol of receptivity: wisdom is not merely speaking well but hearing well. It also frames wisdom socially: those who receive correction find a place to “dwell among the wise,” indicating that wisdom is cultivated and recognized in community. The immediate neighbors (15:30–32) underscore that life can be strengthened by good words and wise correction, while rejecting discipline is self-harm.
Proverbs belongs to Israel’s wisdom tradition, offering covenant-shaped instruction for living skillfully under God’s moral order. Its sayings assume a community where instruction, correction, and social recognition (“wise” vs “fool”) function to form character and preserve life.
