Proverbs 16:19
It is better to live humbly among the lowly than to share wealth with the proud.
19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor, than to divide the plunder with the proud.
It is better to live humbly among the lowly than to share wealth with the proud.
To teach that humility and companionship with the lowly are morally superior to prideful association with the arrogant and the pursuit of wealth gained through arrogance.
This proverb sits in a cluster that contrasts the hidden outcomes of pride and humility. Immediately after the warning that pride goes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18), verse 19 presents the alternative: a “lowly in spirit” posture. The contrast is both moral and social: companionship “with the lowly” versus partnership with the “proud.” The image of “dividing spoil” suggests participation in proud success and shared reward, but the proverb calls that reward inferior to humble integrity. In this section, Proverbs repeatedly evaluates ways of life by what they reveal about the heart and by their alignment with righteousness. The next verse (16:20) continues by commending wise attention and trust in the LORD as the path of blessing, reinforcing that wisdom is Godward rather than status-driven.
Proverbs presents covenant-shaped wisdom for daily life among the people of God, evaluating choices by moral “better-than” contrasts rather than by short-term success. The social world assumed by many proverbs includes distinctions of status and power, where the proud may secure gains and distribute rewards to allies.
The LORD Weighs the Heart: Sovereignty, Humility, Justice, and the Wise Path
Wisdom lives under the LORD's sovereign rule by committing plans to him, humbling the heart, pursuing justice, guarding speech, rejecting pride, and trusting that he establishes the final outcome.
