Proverbs 19:24
Laziness ultimately produces absurd and self-destructive inactivity.
24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
Laziness ultimately produces absurd and self-destructive inactivity.
To expose the extreme irrationality of laziness by portraying a sluggard who will not even complete the simple act of bringing food from the bowl to his mouth.
Proverbs 19:24 follows verse 23, which described the life, rest, and contentment that come from the fear of the Lord. The contrast is intentional. Where reverence produces stability and life, laziness produces stagnation and loss. The surrounding verses continue to highlight the consequences of different dispositions, whether discipline, teachability, integrity, or folly. This verse contributes by showing that folly is not always loud or aggressive. It can be passive, neglectful, and self-defeating.
In ancient Israel, daily survival depended heavily on consistent labor, particularly in agrarian settings. Food production, preparation, and preservation required ongoing effort. Laziness could have immediate and serious consequences. The image of a hand in the dish reflects a setting where food is accessible, yet effort is still required to consume it. The proverb uses this familiar context to illustrate the irrationality of sloth.
Integrity, Counsel, Discipline, Poverty, Anger, and the Fear of the LORD
Wisdom walks in integrity, receives counsel, shows kindness to the poor, disciplines while there is hope, fears the LORD, and trusts that the LORD's purpose prevails over human plans.
