Proverbs 22:6

Early training in wisdom shapes a lifelong path.

Proverbs 22:6 (WEB)

6 Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Central Idea

Early training in wisdom shapes a lifelong path.

Authorial Intent

To instruct parents and guardians to intentionally guide children toward a life shaped by wisdom and righteousness.

Literary Context

Proverbs 22:6 follows verse 5, which warned that the path of the wicked contains thorns and snares and that the one who guards his soul stays far from them. Verse 6 now turns from avoiding the wrong path to training a child in the right path. The connection is direct and strong. Wisdom is not only reactive, keeping away from snares once they appear, but also formative, shaping a person early so that the right path becomes known, loved, and practiced. The chapter’s opening verses have already emphasized a good name, shared dignity before the Maker, prudence before danger, humility before the Lord, and avoidance of wicked paths. Verse 6 applies these values to the next generation: children must be trained in the way of wisdom before the snares of folly become their settled course.

Historical Context

In ancient Israel, children were formed within the household, clan, worshiping community, and covenant instruction. Education was not separated from moral and spiritual formation. Parents were responsible to teach the Lord’s commands, recount His works, model obedience, and discipline children in wisdom. Proverbs 22:6 reflects this household-based and covenant-shaped world. A child’s path was formed through repeated instruction, observed example, correction, and participation in the rhythms of community life.
