Proverbs 22:9
Generosity toward the poor reflects godly character and invites divine blessing.
9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed; for he shares his food with the poor.
Generosity toward the poor reflects godly character and invites divine blessing.
To teach that generosity toward the poor reflects a righteous character and brings divine blessing.
Proverbs 22:9 follows verse 8, which warned that whoever sows injustice reaps calamity and that the rod of fury will be broken. Verse 9 gives the contrasting positive way. Instead of sowing injustice, the generous sow mercy. Instead of using power to harm the vulnerable, they use resources to feed the poor. The connection with Proverbs 22:7 is also important. Verse 7 recognized economic power imbalance; verse 8 warned against unjust use of power; verse 9 commends generous use of resources. Proverbs 22:2 had already declared that rich and poor share the Lord as Maker. Verse 9 now shows what that truth should produce: generous care for the poor.
In ancient Israel, bread represented basic daily provision. The poor could become vulnerable through famine, debt, land loss, widowhood, disability, oppression, or lack of household support. Because survival often depended on household and community generosity, sharing bread with the poor was a concrete act of mercy. Proverbs 22:9 praises the person with a good eye, one who looks upon need with generosity rather than greed or indifference. This stands in contrast to the unjust person of the previous verse who uses power harmfully.
