Amoz אָמוֹץ
Father of the prophet Isaiah
Who is Amoz in the Bible?
Amoz was the father of the prophet Isaiah, one of the most significant figures in the Old Testament. He lived during the reigns of Judah's kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah (Isaiah 1:1), and his name appears throughout Isaiah's prophecies as part of the prophet's formal identification. Though little is known about Amoz himself, he is mentioned in various biblical accounts, including the historical records of King Uzziah's reign (2 Chronicles 26:22) and King Hezekiah's reign (2 Chronicles 32:32), as well as narratives describing Isaiah's role as God's messenger to Hezekiah during the king's illness (2 Kings 20:1; Isaiah 38:1). Amoz's significance in Scripture lies primarily in being the father of Isaiah, whose prophecies shaped Judah's spiritual understanding and continue to influence Christian theology today.
Biography
Amoz was the father of the prophet Isaiah (Isa.1.1; 2.1). He lived during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah (Isa.1.1). Isaiah often mentions his father's name when introducing himself or his prophecies (Isa.2.1; 13.1; 20.2). Amoz was also mentioned in connection with the historical records of Uzziah's reign (2Ch.26.22) and Hezekiah's reign (2Ch.32.32). His name appears in the narrative of Hezekiah's illness and recovery, as Isaiah, the son of Amoz, was sent to deliver messages from God to the king (2Ki.19.2,20; 20.1; Isa.37.2,21; 38.1).
