Father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam

Who is Amram in the Bible?

Amram was a Levite and the father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, making him a central figure in Israel's early history (Exodus 6:18, 20; Numbers 26:58, 59). He was the son of Kohath and married Jochebed, who was his father's sister (Exodus 6:20). As a member of the Kohathite branch of the Levites, Amram's family held special responsibilities in the worship and service of Israel (Numbers 3:19; 1 Chronicles 6:2, 3). Although the Bible records little about Amram's personal life, his significance lies primarily in being the father of the three greatest leaders of the Exodus generation, through whom God accomplished the deliverance of Israel from Egypt.

Biography

Amram was a Levite, the son of Kohath and father of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam (Exo.6.18,20; Num.26.58,59; 1Ch.6.2,3; 23.12,13). He married his father's sister Jochebed (Exo.6.20). Amram's family belonged to the Kohathite branch of Levites (Num.3.19,27; 1Ch.6.18; 24.20; 26.23). As the father of Moses and Aaron, Amram played a significant role in the history of Israel, although little is recorded about his own life.

23:13); and a son of Kohath, the son of Levi (Ex 6:18; Nu 3:19, etc.). It is not certain that he was literally the son of Kohath, but rather his descendant, since there were ten generations from Joseph to Joshua (1Ch 7:20-27), while only four are actually mentioned from Levi to Moses for the corresponding period. Moreover the Kohathites at the time of the Exodus numbered 8,600 (Nu 3:28), which would therefore have been an impossibility if only two generations had lived. It seems best to regard Amram as a descendant of Kohath, and his wife Jochebed as a "daughter of Levi" in a general sense.
