Messenger who carried Jeremiah's letter to the exiles

Who is Elasah in the Bible?

Elasah was a messenger who, alongside Gemariah, carried a letter from the prophet Jeremiah to the Jewish exiles in Babylon, as recorded in Jeremiah 29:3. The letter he delivered contained Jeremiah's encouraging message to the exiles, instructing them to build houses, plant gardens, and pray for the peace of Babylon rather than resist their captivity. Elasah's selection for this important task indicates he was a trusted figure capable of safely transporting significant communication to the distant exiled community. Though he appears only briefly in Scripture, Elasah served a vital role in delivering one of the Bible's most significant messages of comfort and spiritual guidance during Israel's exile.

Biography

Elasah is mentioned in Jer.29.3 as one of the two messengers (along with Gemariah) who carried a letter from the prophet Jeremiah to the exiles in Babylon. The letter contained Jeremiah's message encouraging the exiles to settle down, build houses, and pray for the peace of the city where they were living. Elasah's role as a messenger indicates he was trusted to deliver this important communication.
