Gaddiel גַּדִּיאֵל
Son of Sodi; representative of Zebulun among the spies.
Who is Gaddiel in the Bible?
Gaddiel, the son of Sodi, was the representative of the tribe of Zebulun among the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore Canaan (Numbers 13:10). He was chosen to scout the land and report on its resources and inhabitants, as part of Moses' effort to assess whether Israel could conquer it (Numbers 13:17-20). Unlike Joshua and Caleb, Gaddiel was among the ten spies who delivered a negative report, emphasizing the strength of the Canaanites and the difficulty of taking the land (Numbers 13:31-33). His report contributed to the people's fear and rebellion against God's promise, ultimately resulting in God's judgment that the generation would not enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14:26-35). Gaddiel thus represents those whose lack of faith hindered Israel's progress toward their divine inheritance.
Biography
Gaddiel, the son of Sodi, is mentioned in Num.13.10 as the representative of the tribe of Zebulun among the twelve spies sent by Moses to explore the land of Canaan. The spies were chosen from each of the twelve tribes of Israel to scout out the land, assess its resources, and gather information about its inhabitants (Num.13.17-20). Gaddiel was one of the ten spies who brought back a negative report, emphasizing the strength of the Canaanites and the challenges of conquering the land (Num.13.31-33). Only Joshua and Caleb, the other two spies, gave a positive report and encouraged the Israelites to trust in God's promise (Num.14.6-9). As a result of the people's unbelief and rebellion, God declared that the generation who had witnessed the Exodus would not enter the Promised Land, except for Joshua and Caleb (Num.14.20-35).
