An official who read Jeremiah's scroll to Jehoiakim.

Who is Jehudi in the Bible?

Jehudi was an official in the court of King Jehoiakim of Judah during the reign of that unfaithful monarch. He appears in Jeremiah 36 as the messenger sent to retrieve the prophet Jeremiah's written scroll from the scribe Baruch, and he is remembered for reading that scroll aloud first to the royal officials and then to King Jehoiakim himself. As Jehudi read the words of warning from the prophet, the king contemptuously cut off sections of the scroll with a scribe's knife and burned them in the fire until the entire document was destroyed (Jer. 36:21-23). Jehudi's role in this episode illustrates the stubborn resistance of Judah's leadership to God's word, as neither the king nor his officials repented or feared despite the scroll's dire warnings of judgment.

Biography

Jehudi was an official during the reign of King Jehoiakim of Judah. He was the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi. When Baruch, Jeremiah's scribe, read the prophet's scroll in the temple, the officials sent Jehudi to summon Baruch and have him bring the scroll. Jehudi then read the scroll to the officials, who decided to report its contents to the king. Jehudi was then sent to read the scroll to King Jehoiakim. As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king cut off the portion with a scribe's knife and threw it into the fire until the entire scroll was burned. Despite the warnings in the scroll, neither the king nor his officials showed any fear or repentance.
