A priest who returned from the Babylonian exile.
Who is Meremoth in the Bible?
Meremoth was a priest who returned from the Babylonian exile and played a significant role in rebuilding Jerusalem during the 5th century BC. He was among those who received the valuable silver, gold, and vessels that Ezra brought back to the city (Ezra 8:33). During Nehemiah's reconstruction of Jerusalem's walls, Meremoth, son of Uriah, personally repaired two sections of the wall (Nehemiah 3:4, 21). He also sealed the covenant with Nehemiah, committing to follow God's Law alongside other priests and leaders (Nehemiah 10:5). Meremoth's involvement in both the spiritual and physical restoration of Jerusalem after exile demonstrates the priestly leadership essential to the community's religious and civic renewal.
