Levite descendant of Izhar

Who is Shelomith in the Bible?

Shelomith was a Levite who descended from Izhar, son of Kohath, and is listed in 1 Chronicles 23:18 as the first of Izhar's sons. He held a position of prominence within the Izharite clan during King David's reorganization of Levitical duties, and is mentioned again in 1 Chronicles 24:22 as the head of his father's house. Additionally, a family bearing the name Shelomith returned from exile with Ezra, as noted in Ezra 8:10. His significance lies in his role as a Levite leader during a formative period of Israel's religious organization under the monarchy.
