Unnamed#2
Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Who is Unnamed#2 in the Bible?
Unnamed#2 is an ancestor of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:15). This person is one of many individuals in Jesus' family line whose name was not preserved in the biblical record. Matthew deliberately structured his genealogy into three sets of fourteen generations to emphasize the theological significance of Jesus' birth, and this unnamed figure was likely included to achieve that numerical pattern, as Matthew is known to have omitted certain individuals from the complete ancestral line. While we do not know this person's identity or accomplishments, their presence in the genealogy underscores the importance of Jesus' connection to the house of David and the fulfillment of Old Testament messianic promises.
Biography
This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
