Unnamed#5

Male Tribe of Judah G0000 1 book

Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Who is Unnamed#5 in the Bible?

Unnamed#5 is an ancestor of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Christ in Matthew 1:15. This figure is one of several individuals included in Matthew's account specifically to structure Jesus' lineage into three sets of fourteen generations, as Matthew himself notes in Matthew 1:17. Scholars believe Matthew deliberately omitted certain ancestors from the historical record, as evidenced by his known exclusion of kings Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah from the genealogy, making this unnamed person part of Matthew's intentional genealogical framework. The inclusion of such figures underscores Matthew's theological purpose in demonstrating Jesus' rightful place within Israel's royal and ancestral line.

Biography

This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
