Unnamed#6
Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Who is Unnamed#6 in the Bible?
Unnamed#6 is an ancestor of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:15). This figure is one of several individuals Matthew included in his genealogical record to structure Jesus' lineage into three sets of fourteen generations, as explicitly noted in Matthew 1:17. Matthew deliberately omitted certain known ancestors elsewhere in his gospel, including the kings Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah, making it likely he inserted or emphasized other figures to achieve his numerical pattern. The theological significance of this unnamed ancestor lies in the larger purpose of Matthew's genealogy: to establish Jesus' legal descent from David and Abraham, thereby supporting his claim as the promised Messiah within the Jewish tradition.
Biography
This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
