Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Who is Unnamed#7 in the Bible?

Unnamed#7 is an ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:15. This individual is one of several figures in the genealogical record whose name was not preserved in Scripture. Matthew deliberately structured Jesus' lineage into three sets of fourteen generations, as noted in Matthew 1:17, and inserted certain ancestors or omitted others to achieve this numerical pattern, making this unnamed person part of the deliberate genealogical framework rather than a historically documented individual. The significance of this ancestor lies not in personal accomplishment or narrative role, but in the theological importance of establishing Jesus' legal descent through Joseph from the line of David, fulfilling Old Testament messianic expectations.

Biography

This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
