Unnamed#8

Male Tribe of Judah G0000 1 book

Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Who is Unnamed#8 in the Bible?

Unnamed#8 is an ancestor of Joseph, the earthly husband of Mary and legal father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Christ (Matthew 1:15). This individual is one of several unnamed figures Matthew included in his account to structure Jesus' lineage into three sets of 14 generations, as explicitly stated in Matthew 1:17. Matthew deliberately omitted certain known ancestors, such as the kings Ahaziah, Joash, and Amaziah, to achieve this numerical pattern, making this unnamed person part of Matthew's deliberate theological arrangement rather than a historically detailed genealogy. The inclusion of this figure underscores Matthew's purpose in presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament expectations through a carefully constructed pattern of generations.

Biography

This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
