Ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary.

Who is Unnamed#9 in the Bible?

Unnamed#9 is an ancestor of Joseph, the husband of Mary and earthly father of Jesus, appearing in Matthew's genealogy of Jesus recorded in Matthew 1:15. This individual is one of several figures in Matthew's account whose name was not preserved in historical records. Scholars believe Matthew deliberately included this unnamed ancestor, along with other unnamed or skipped individuals, to construct a precise numerical pattern in Jesus' genealogy: three sets of fourteen generations, as Matthew himself notes in Matthew 1:17. The inclusion of unnamed ancestors like this one demonstrates Matthew's theological intention to present Jesus as the fulfillment of God's promises to David, with the carefully structured genealogy serving as a framework for understanding Jesus' significance in God's redemptive plan.

Biography

This unnamed person is inserted to increase the number of generations in Jesus' genealogy as recorded in Matthew to become the same as the number of generations in Luke. Matthew is known to deliberately miss out some individuals (kings Ahaziah, Joash and Amaziah) so it is likely he also missed out others, in order to create three sets of 14 generations (Mat.1.17).
