Who is Uzziel in the Bible?
Uzziel was a Levite and the son of Kohath, making him the uncle of Moses and Aaron (Exodus 6:18, 6:22). As a descendant of Levi, he came from the priestly line and had three sons: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri (1 Chronicles 6:2). His descendants, known as the Uzzielites, formed one of the major Levite clans responsible for caring for and transporting the tabernacle and its holy furnishings (Numbers 3:19, 3:30). Notably, when Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu died after offering unauthorized fire before the Lord, Moses called upon Uzziel's sons Mishael and Elzaphan to carry away their bodies (Leviticus 10:4). The Uzzielites held important roles in tabernacle service throughout Israel's wilderness period and beyond, reflecting the family's enduring significance in Israel's religious life.
Biography
Uzziel was a Levite, the son of Kohath and grandson of Levi. He was the brother of Amram, making him the uncle of Moses and Aaron. Uzziel had three sons: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri. His descendants, the Uzzielites, were one of the Levite clans responsible for the care and transportation of the tabernacle. Uzziel's son Elzaphan and his brother Mishael were called by Moses to carry away the bodies of Nadab and Abihu after they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord. The descendants of Uzziel were also counted in the census of the Levites and given specific duties in the service of the tabernacle.
