Where is Chesil in the Bible?

Chesil was a town in the Bible allotted to the tribe of Judah in the southern part of their territory, as recorded in Joshua 19:4. The town appears in the list of cities given to Judah's inheritance during the division of Canaan among the Israelite tribes. Scholars note that "Chesil" may have resulted from a textual error, as other biblical manuscripts refer to this location as Bethul (in the Septuagint) or Bethuel (in 1 Chronicles 4:30), suggesting these names likely refer to the same settlement. Little else is known about Chesil's specific role in biblical history, and it remains one of the lesser-known towns in Judah's territorial allotment.
