Where is Esek in the Bible?

Esek was a well located in the Negev region of ancient Canaan, in the area between Gerar and Rehoboth, though its exact site has not been definitively identified by archaeologists. The well was dug by the servants of Isaac, the son of Abraham, during a period when Isaac was living in the land of the Philistines. Esek is significant in biblical history because it became the site of a dispute between Isaac's herdsmen and the local Philistine herdsmen over water rights, which is why Isaac named the well "Esek," meaning "contention" or "quarrel" in Hebrew. This event, recorded in Genesis 26, illustrates the conflicts Isaac faced while dwelling in foreign lands and demonstrates God's protection over Isaac during times of tension with his neighbors.
