Midian standard
Midian, a nation descended from Abraham through Keturah (Genesis 25:2), which oppressed Israel during the time of the judges (Judges 6-8) and was later defeated by Gideon (Judges 7-8).
Where is Midian in the Bible?
Midian was an ancient nation located in northwestern Arabia, primarily in the region east of the Gulf of Aqaba and south of Edom in what is now Saudi Arabia. According to Genesis 25:2, the Midianites were descendants of Abraham through his wife Keturah. The Midianites appear prominently in biblical history as traders and raiders who oppressed the Israelites during the period of the judges, particularly in the days of Gideon around 1200 BCE. Gideon led a divinely empowered military campaign against them, achieving a decisive victory with a small force that demonstrated God's power to deliver Israel from their enemies (Judges 6-8). The Midianites represent both Israel's external enemies and, theologically, obstacles to God's purposes that were overcome through faithful leadership and divine intervention.
