Where is Ur in the Bible?

Ur, also known as Ur of the Chaldeans, was an ancient city located in Mesopotamia in what is now southern Iraq. It was the birthplace and hometown of Abraham, the patriarch of Israel and father of the faithful in Jewish and Christian tradition. According to the Bible, God called Abraham to leave Ur and journey to the land of Canaan, a pivotal moment that set in motion God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 11:28, 31; 15:7). This call to Abraham from Ur represents a foundational event in biblical history, marking the beginning of God's plan of salvation and the establishment of the nation of Israel. Ur's mention in Scripture underscores its theological importance as the starting point of Abraham's faith journey and obedience to God's calling.
