Deuteronomy does not allow the king's power to place him above the instruction. He writes a copy, keeps it near and reads it continually so that he learns to fear the Lord and does not exalt his heart over his countrymen. The copied words therefore serve accountable conduct rather than royal immunity. Joshua's inscription likewise belongs to public hearing of the named law, while Exodus' doubled gathering has a different purpose, provision before the Sabbath.
