Titus 1:10-16

Rebuke of Rebellious Teachers and the Exposure of False Profession

Because many rebellious and deceptive teachers are upsetting whole households for dishonest gain, Titus must rebuke them sharply so that the church may be sound in the faith and visibly distinct from empty profession.

Scripture Text

1:10 For many are rebellious and full of empty talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision,

1:11 Who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not.

1:12 As one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

1:13 This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sternly, so that they will be sound in the faith

1:14 And will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of men who have rejected the truth.

1:15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. Indeed, both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions they deny Him. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.

Watch Out

  • Misreading: Rebuking sharply justifies harsh, unloving behavior toward anyone who disagrees. Correction: Paul's command aims at restoring soundness in the faith and protecting the flock. The tone is firm but purposeful, governed by love for truth and concern for spiritual health.
  • Misreading: All cultural critiques are inherently sinful or prejudiced. Correction: Paul references a Cretan saying to illustrate a real moral challenge affecting the church. His concern is spiritual integrity, not ethnic hostility.
  • Misreading: Claiming to know God is sufficient evidence of salvation. Correction: Titus 1:16 shows that genuine faith must be accompanied by obedient works. A consistent denial of God through behavior exposes false profession.
