The Bowstring Test Fails
The first paid attempt to bind Samson fails, while the hidden ambush exposes its danger.
Judges 16:7-9 (BSB)
7Samson told her, “If they tie me up with seven fresh bowstrings that have not been dried, I will become as weak as any other man.”
8So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him up with them.
9While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he snapped the bowstrings like a strand of yarn seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
Historical Context
Delilah’s room contains hidden men during the bowstring test.
Literary Context
Philistine lords have offered Delilah silver to learn how Samson can be tied and subdued (16:4-6). This is the first visible trial of Samson's answer. Its failure prompts her complaint and a second test with new ropes in 16:10-12; each test occurs within the rulers' earlier harmful plan.
What is the big idea of Judges 16:7-9?
The first paid attempt to bind Samson fails, while the hidden ambush exposes its danger.
Understanding the Big Idea
Samson tells Delilah that seven fresh, undried cords or bowstrings would make him weak. Philistine lords supply them, she binds him, and men wait concealed in the room. At her warning he snaps the bonds, leaving the source of his strength unknown. The test exposes an active attempt to overpower him; it does not reveal that Samson knew about the hidden men or that the Spirit newly came upon him in this scene.
Authorial Intent
To narrate the first false strength explanation, Delilah’s binding test with hidden men, and the failure to learn how Samson can be subdued.
How does Judges 16:7-9 point to Christ?
The snapped bowstrings are not a promise that believers can escape every trap. Christ’s death for sins and resurrection are the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); this failed ambush is no rule of physical invulnerability.
Questions for Reflection
- What condition does Samson propose?
- Who supplies and ties the bowstrings?
- Who is hidden?
- What happens when Delilah calls out?
- What remains unknown?
Chapter: Judges 16
Samson's Fall, Blindness, Final Prayer, and Death
The LORD can still judge His enemies through a broken deliverer, but Samson's blindness warns that strength without consecrated dependence ends in bondage.
