Judges 18:11-13

Six Hundred Armed Danites Reach Micah's House

The scouts’ proposal becomes an armed movement that returns to Micah’s household.

Judges 18:11-13 (BSB)

11So six hundred Danites departed from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war.

12They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. That is why the place west of Kiriath-jearim is called Mahaneh-dan to this day.

13And from there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah’s house.

Historical Context

The force moves from Zorah and Eshtaol to Kiriath-jearim in Judah and Micah’s Ephraim house.

Literary Context

The five scouts had urged their kin to take the good land around quiet Laish and claimed God gave it to them (18:7-10). Their proposal now becomes a march. Micah's house is not a chance detour in the larger narrative: the scouts already lodged there and met his hired priest (18:1-6), and the following scene returns to the cult objects they know are inside (18:14-18).

What is the big idea of Judges 18:11-13?

The scouts’ proposal becomes an armed movement that returns to Micah’s household.

Understanding the Big Idea

Six hundred Danites equipped for war leave Zorah and Eshtaol. They camp by Kiriath-jearim, where the narrator explains the name Mahaneh-dan, then travel into Ephraim and reach Micah's house. The unit records the size and route of an armed group; it gives no new divine command and has not yet narrated the taking of objects or the attack on Laish.

Authorial Intent

To mark the shift from five scouts’ report to an armed Danite march and locate the force at Mahaneh-dan and Micah’s house.

How does Judges 18:11-13 point to Christ?

An armed journey is not a gospel mission merely because the travelers claim divine favor. Christ’s death for sins and resurrection are the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4); this route notice gives no mandate for readers to seize land or property.

Questions for Reflection

  1. How many armed Danites depart?
  2. From where do they leave?
  3. Where do they camp and what name is explained?
  4. Where do they go next?
  5. Does this unit record a new divine instruction?

Dan's Migration: Stolen Gods and a Tribal Shrine

When the LORD's word no longer governs inheritance, worship, and leadership, covenant people can turn even land-seeking and religious inquiry into theft, violence, idolatry, and lasting apostasy.
