Heman הֵימָן
Grandson of Judah through Zerah.
Who is Heman in the Bible?
Heman appears in the Bible as a grandson of Judah through his son Zerah, mentioned in the genealogy recorded in 1 Chronicles 2:6. He was one of five sons born to Zerah, along with his brothers Zimri, Ethan, Calcol, and Dara. However, the Bible also refers to another prominent Heman who lived centuries later, a Levite musician appointed by King David as one of the leaders of temple singing (1 Chronicles 15:17 and 2 Chronicles 5:12). This later Heman was highly regarded as "the king's seer in matters of God" (1 Chronicles 25:5) and had fourteen sons and three daughters who served with him in the temple chorus. While the earlier Heman in Judah's genealogy is mentioned only briefly, the Levite Heman's role as a spiritual leader and musician demonstrates his significant place in Israel's worship and religious leadership.
Biography
Heman is mentioned briefly in the genealogy of Judah in 1 Chronicles. He was the son of Zerah, who was one of the twin sons of Judah and Tamar (Gen.38.30). Heman's brothers were Zimri, Ethan, Calcol, and Dara (1Ch.2.6). This genealogy traces the descendants of Judah, highlighting some of the notable figures in the tribe's history. No further information is provided about Heman's life or role in the Bible. (1Ch.2.6).
