Official under Jehoiakim

Who is Nethaniah in the Bible?

Nethaniah was the father of Jehudi, an official in the court of King Jehoiakim of Judah during the late seventh century BC (Jeremiah 36:14). While Nethaniah himself appears only briefly in Scripture, he is significant as the father of Jehudi, who played a crucial role in the events surrounding Jeremiah's prophecies. Jehudi was sent by the royal officials to summon Baruch, Jeremiah's scribe, to read the scroll of Jeremiah's words to them, and he later brought the scroll before King Jehoiakim. Through his son's actions, Nethaniah is connected to a pivotal moment in which the king heard God's warnings through the prophet Jeremiah, only to reject them by burning the scroll.
