Son of Gilead and Manassite clan

Who is Shechem in the Bible?

Shechem was a son of Gilead and grandson of Manasseh, making him part of the line of Joseph. He served as the forefather of the Shechemite clan, a family group within the tribe of Manasseh (Numbers 26:31). When the Israelites divided the land of Canaan, the Shechemites received their tribal inheritance as part of the half-tribe of Manasseh that settled west of the Jordan River (Joshua 17:2). As a clan ancestor, Shechem's significance lies in his role establishing one of the foundational family divisions within the tribe of Manasseh, helping to structure Israelite society and land distribution during the settlement period.
