Son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah

Who is Zechariah in the Bible?

Zechariah was one of several sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, mentioned in 2 Chronicles 21:2. Though he came from a royal family and received significant gifts including silver, gold, and fortified cities from his father, Zechariah did not inherit the kingdom because his older brother Jehoram was firstborn and received the throne instead. His life illustrates the practice of primogeniture in ancient Judah, where the firstborn son received the primary inheritance despite the wealth and honor granted to other sons.

Biography

Zechariah was one of the sons of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. His brothers were Azariah, Jehiel, Michael, and Shephatiah. Jehoshaphat gave his sons many gifts of silver, gold, and valuable possessions, along with fortified cities in Judah. However, he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, Zechariah's eldest brother, because he was the firstborn.
