Where is Shebarim in the Bible?

Shebarim was a location near the city of Ai in ancient Canaan, in the region of the central highlands. According to Joshua 7:5, the Israelites fled toward Shebarim after being defeated in their first attempt to conquer Ai, a defeat that resulted from Achan's sin of taking forbidden plunder from Jericho. The name Shebarim may mean "the quarries" or refer to a place where the Israelite forces were broken and scattered during their retreat toward Gilgal in the Jordan valley. While the exact location of Shebarim has not been definitively identified in archaeological surveys, it serves as a significant marker in the biblical narrative of Israel's conquest of Canaan and God's judgment against sin.

vised Version margin reads "the quarries"; so Keil, Steuernagel, etc. Septuagint reads "until they were broken," i.e. until the rout was complete. The direction of the flight was of course from Ai toward Gilgal in the Jordan valley. No trace of such name has yet been found.
