Necessity of the Cross and Resurrection

The cross is certain, even when disciples fail to comprehend it.

Jesus’ death and resurrection accomplish God’s redemptive plan, providing salvation and eternal life to all who trust in Him.

Departing from there (κἀκεῖθεν ἐξελθόντες, kakeithen exelthontes), Jesus passes through Galilee (διεπορεύοντο διὰ τῆς Γαλιλαίας, dieporeuonto dia tēs Galilaias) and does not want anyone to know (οὐκ ἤθελεν ἵνα τις γνοῖ, ouk ēthelen hina tis gnoi), for He is teaching His disciples (ἐδίδασκεν τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ, edidasken tous mathētas autou). He says, 'The Son of Man is being delivered' (Ὁ Υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδίδοται, Ho Huios tou anthrōpou paradidotai) into the hands of men (εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων, eis cheiras anthrōpōn), and they will kill Him (ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, apoktenousin auton), and when He has been killed (ἀποκτανθεὶς, apoktantheis), after three days He will rise (μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀναστήσεται, meta treis hēmeras anastēsetai). But they did not understand the saying (ἠγνόουν τὸ ῥῆμα, ēgnooun to rhēma) and were afraid to ask Him (ἐφοβοῦντο αὐτὸν ἐπερωτῆσαι, ephobounto auton eperōtēsai). The life of Christ here reveals intentional instruction on the necessity of His betrayal, death, and resurrection, while exposing the disciples’ continued misunderstanding and fear.

To reinforce the certainty of Jesus’ suffering, death, and resurrection while revealing the disciples’ continued misunderstanding.

This is the second explicit passion prediction (cf. Mark 8:31). It follows the exorcism narrative, reinforcing that victory over evil is ultimately secured through the cross.

Galilee had been the primary setting of public ministry. The term παραδίδοται (paradidotai) implies judicial handing over or betrayal. Jewish messianic expectations did not typically include a suffering and killed Messiah.
