Who is Hur in the Bible?

Hur was a prominent Israelite leader who served as a trusted companion and support to Moses during the wilderness period following the exodus from Egypt. He is best known for his role in Exodus 17:10-12, where he and Aaron held up Moses' arms during the battle against the Amalekites, ensuring Israel's victory as long as Moses' hands remained raised. Moses also entrusted Hur with leadership responsibilities, appointing him alongside Aaron to oversee the people while he ascended Mount Sinai to receive the tablets of the law (Exodus 24:14). Additionally, Hur was the grandfather of Bezalel, the divinely gifted artisan who directed the construction of the tabernacle and its furnishings (Exodus 31:2, 35:30). Hur's significance lies in his role as a faithful supporter of Moses and a link to the skilled craftsmen who built Israel's most sacred structures.

Biography

Hur was a significant figure in the early history of Israel, particularly during the Israelites' journey in the wilderness after their exodus from Egypt. He is mentioned several times in the books of Exodus and Chronicles.

In Exo.17.10-12, Hur is described as one of the two men who accompanied Moses to the top of a hill during the battle against the Amalekites. Along with Aaron, Hur supported Moses' arms, which were holding the staff of God. As long as Moses' hands were raised, Israel prevailed in the battle. Hur's presence and assistance were crucial in securing the victory.

Later, in Exo.24.14, Moses appointed Hur, along with Aaron, to oversee the people while he went up to Mount Sinai to receive the tablets of the law from God. This indicates that Hur was a trusted and respected leader among the Israelites.

Hur is also mentioned in the context of the construction of the tabernacle. In Exo.31.2 and Exo.35.30, God appointed Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, as the chief artisan responsible for crafting the tabernacle and its furnishings. This connection suggests that Hur's family was skilled in craftsmanship and held a prominent position within the tribe of Judah.
