First Kings 18:38 uses esh for the divine confirmation of Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal: 'Then the fire (esh) of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.' The esh YHWH (fire of the Lord) falls from heaven and consumes not only the sacrifice but the altar, the stones, and the water — total consumption, leaving no ambiguity. The fire is the divine response to Elijah's prayer and the proof that YHWH, not Baal, is God.

Elijah drenched the altar and the sacrifice with water three times to eliminate any possibility of natural ignition, and the esh YHWH consumes everything — the offering, the wood, the stone altar, the dust, and the water. The excess of the consumption (the stones, the water) establishes the divine origin beyond doubt. All the people see it and fall on their faces: 'the Lord, he is God' (18:39). The refiner's esh (esh metzaref): fire that purifies rather than destroys. The messenger of the covenant comes not only to consume but to refine — like a silversmith or a goldsmith who uses fire to burn off impurities and reveal the pure metal. This is the judgment-as-purification use of esh: the Levites will be refined (3:3), not destroyed. The consuming and the purifying are both present in the divine esh — what is consumed is the impurity; what remains is the refined people of God.

אֵשׁ (esh) is the OT's primary image for what it is like to encounter the holy God. Deuteronomy 4:24 says it directly: God himself is a consuming fire. This means the approach to God is not casual, not safe in the sense of risk-free. The burning bush (Exod 3) shows the paradox: the fire burns but does not consume — God in his grace holds back the consuming aspect of his fire when he chooses to be present to his people.
But the fire remains there. The Sinai scene (Exod 19:18 — the mountain blazing) and the Elijah contest (1 Kgs 18:38 — fire from heaven consuming everything) are both reminders that the consuming aspect of divine fire is real and active. אֵשׁ (esh) is a feminine noun in Hebrew. It is one of the oldest and most basic words in the Semitic languages — cognate with Aramaic isha and Arabic nar. In the OT, esh occurs in several significant compounds: esh okhelet (consuming fire, Deut 4:24; Heb 12:29), esh YHWH (fire of the Lord, 1 Kgs 18:38; Num 11:1), and labbat-esh (flame of fire, Exod 3:2). The 'aishim' (H801) — the fire-offerings, the offerings by fire — are a distinct form of the root, though the connection is debated.
The altar fire in Leviticus 6:12-13 is to be kept burning continually (tamid) — the esh on the altar is perpetually lit, a permanent sign of ongoing covenant approach. The NT inherits esh through the Greek pyr (G4442, fire), which carries all the same theological dimensions.
The NT's fire theology is entirely continuous with the OT's esh. Hebrews 12:29 quotes Deuteronomy 4:24 directly: 'our God is a consuming fire' — the same statement Moses made to Israel now applies to the new covenant community that has come to Mount Zion (Heb 12:22).
