Ezekiel 35:1-15
Mount Seir's ancient hatred will return upon its own head: the nation that loved bloodshed, rejoiced over Israel's desolation, and claimed the Lord's land will itself become desolate and know that the Lord heard every boast.
Scripture Text
35:1 Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,
35:2 “Son of man, set Your face against Mount Seir, and prophesy against it,
35:3 And tell it, ‘The Lord Yahweh says: “Behold, I am against You, Mount Seir, and I will stretch out my hand against You. I will make You a desolation and an astonishment.
35:4 I will lay Your cities waste, and You will be desolate. Then You will know that I am Yahweh.
35:5 “ ‘ “Because You have had a perpetual hostility, and have given over the children of Israel to the power of the sword in the time of their calamity, in the time of the iniquity of the end;
35:6 Therefore, as I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “I will prepare You for blood, and blood will pursue You. Since You have not hated blood, therefore blood will pursue You.
35:7 Thus I will make Mount Seir an astonishment and a desolation. I will cut off from it Him who passes through and Him who returns.
35:8 I will fill its mountains with its slain. The slain with the sword will fall in Your hills and in Your valleys and in all Your watercourses.
35:9 I will make You a perpetual desolation, and Your cities will not be inhabited. Then You will know that I am Yahweh.
35:10 “ ‘ “Because You have said, ‘These two nations and these two countries will be mine, and we will possess it;’ whereas Yahweh was there:
35:11 Therefore, as I live,” says the Lord Yahweh, “I will do according to Your anger, and according to Your envy which You have shown out of Your hatred against them; and I will make myself known among them when I judge You.
35:12 You will know that I, Yahweh, have heard all Your insults which You have spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They have been laid desolate. They have been given us to devour.’
35:13 You have magnified Yourselves against me with Your mouth, and have multiplied Your words against me. I have heard it.”
35:14 The Lord Yahweh says: “When the whole earth rejoices, I will make You desolate.
35:15 As You rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel because it was desolate, so I will do to You. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, and all Edom, even all of it. Then they will know that I am Yahweh.’ ”
Mount Seir's ancient hatred will return upon its own head: the nation that loved bloodshed, rejoiced over Israel's desolation, and claimed the Lord's land will itself become desolate and know that the Lord heard every boast.
The Lord will make Mount Seir desolate because Edom turned Israel's day of calamity into an opportunity for revenge, bloodshed, boasting, and attempted possession; hatred against the Lord's people is finally speech and rebellion heard by the Lord Himself.
This passage speaks to wounds caused by long hostility, opportunistic betrayal, and people who rejoice when others collapse. Its burden is to assure God's people that the Lord hears contemptuous speech, sees malicious joy, and judges revenge without becoming unjust. It also warns the church that old bitterness can become a settled identity, that gloating can masquerade as discernment, and that claiming another's loss as one's gain can put a person in direct opposition to God.
- The Word Against Mount Seir The Lord commands Ezekiel to set His face against Mount Seir and prophesy. The oracle opens with divine opposition, the stretching out of the Lord's hand, and the promise that Seir's towns will become ruins and its land desolate so that it will know that He is the Lord.
- Ancient Hostility and Bloodshed Repaid The Lord identifies Edom's ancient hostility and its handing over of Israel to the sword in the time of calamity. Because Seir did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue it, its mountains and valleys will be filled with the slain, and its cities will not be inhabited.
- Territorial Presumption Exposed Mount Seir claimed that the two nations and countries would become its possession, even though the Lord was there. The Lord declares that He will act according to the anger, envy, and hatred Seir showed, and He will make Himself known when He judges it.
- Boasting Heard and Desolation Returned The Lord states that Seir multiplied words against Him and that He heard. As Seir rejoiced over Israel's desolated inheritance, so Seir and all Edom will become desolate, and the nations will know that He is the Lord.
Ezekiel 35 reveals the holy God who hears proud speech, judges revenge, and refuses to let hatred have the final word over His covenant purposes. The gospel does not deny divine justice; it reveals that God answers human hostility most fully through Christ, who entrusted Himself to the One who judges justly, bore judgment for sinners, and will return to judge evil in righteousness. Believers therefore reject revenge, territorial pride, and delight in another's ruin, trusting the crucified and risen Lord whose kingdom is received by grace and whose justice is never asleep.
