Biblical Theology
Psalm 5 argues that the holy LORD hears the prayer of His servant, rejects wickedness, grants access by His abundant love, leads His people in righteousness, judges deceitful rebels, and protects those who take refuge in Him. The psalm’s moral contrast is not self-righteous triumphalism but covenantal prayer: David depends on mercy, reveres the LORD’s holiness, seeks righteous guidance, and rejoices that divine favor surrounds the righteous.

Psalm 5 contributes to the biblical pattern of the righteous servant who prays, trusts the holy King, walks in righteousness, suffers opposition from deceitful enemies, and takes refuge in the LORD. Christ fulfills this pattern as the perfectly righteous Son who prayed to the Father, loved righteousness, spoke truth without deceit, endured false and murderous opposition, entered God’s presence not by borrowed mercy for Himself but by His own righteousness, and opens access for His people through His blood...

Psalm 5 reflects covenant worship before the holy LORD. David approaches God by abundant steadfast love, bows in reverence toward the holy temple, seeks guidance in righteousness, and rejoices that the LORD blesses the righteous. The psalm holds together covenant access, covenant ethics, covenant judgment, and covenant refuge.

David brings words, groaning, and cries before the LORD in the morning and waits for Him.
A heart set in order before the King at dawn is a heart prepared to see God's hand throughout the day.
1 Give ear to my words, O LORD; consider my groaning.
2 Attend to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I pray.
3 In the morning, O LORD, You hear my voice; at daybreak I lay my plea before You and wait in expectation.
God does not delight in evil, and the wicked cannot stand before Him.
The holiness of God bars the entrance of the wicked, but His mercy provides a doorway for the faithful.
4 For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; no evil can dwell with You.
5 The boastful cannot stand in Your presence; You hate all workers of iniquity.
6 You destroy those who tell lies; the LORD abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
David’s access is grounded in the LORD’s covenant love, and his posture is reverent worship.
7 But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your loving devotion; in reverence I will bow down toward Your holy temple.
Enemy pressure makes righteous guidance necessary.
The Lord leads His people in a straight path, judging the deceitful and shielding the faithful with His favor.
8 Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make straight Your way before me.
The wicked are exposed by corrupt speech and destructive hearts, and David entrusts judgment to God.
9 For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction lies within them. Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.
10 Declare them guilty, O God; let them fall by their own devices. Drive them out for their many transgressions, for they have rebelled against You.
Those who take refuge in the LORD sing for joy because He blesses and surrounds the righteous.
11 But let all who take refuge in You rejoice; let them ever shout for joy. May You shelter them, that those who love Your name may rejoice in You.
12 For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous; You surround them with the shield of Your favor.
