Romans 1:16-17 (WEB)

16 For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Christ, because it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.

17 For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

Central Idea

God’s saving righteousness is revealed in the gospel and is received entirely by faith.

Authorial Intent

To state the central thesis of Romans: the gospel is God’s saving power because it reveals his righteousness, which is received by faith.

Literary Context

Romans 1:16-17 stands as the programmatic statement for the whole letter. After introducing the gospel in Romans 1:1-7 and expressing his eagerness to preach it in Rome in Romans 1:8-15, Paul now explains why he is eager and unashamed. These verses lead directly into Romans 1:18-3:20, where Paul exposes universal human sin and guilt, and then into Romans 3:21-26, where he unfolds the righteousness of God manifested through faith in Jesus Christ.

Historical Context

Paul writes to believers in the imperial capital after expressing his eagerness to preach the gospel there. Rome represented political power, public honor, imperial ideology, religious plurality, and cultural status. Paul’s declaration that he is not ashamed of the gospel stands against any pressure to view the message of a crucified and risen Messiah as weak or dishonorable. Believers in Rome, including Jewish and Gentile Christians The gospel comes first to the Jew because God’s covenant promises, Scriptures, temple worship, patriarchs, and messianic expectation were given through Israel. Yet in Christ, the same saving gospel extends also to the Gentile, fulfilling God’s purpose to bless the nations.
