Ephesians 1:20-23

The risen and exalted Christ reigns above all things for the good of His church, which is His body and fullness.

Scripture Text

1:20 Which He worked in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and made Him to sit at His right hand in the heavenly places,

1:21 Far above all rule, authority, power, dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.

1:22 He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things for the assembly,

1:23 Which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Anchor

The risen and exalted Christ reigns above all things for the good of His church, which is His body and fullness.

God's power toward believers is the same power by which He raised Christ from the dead, seated Him above every authority, placed all things under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church.

Point of Contact

The church must stop living as though its identity is fragile, self-made, or culturally negotiated, and must learn to live from what God has already done in Christ.

Rhythm
  1. Identity received Believers are defined by divine calling, not self-invention. They are saints because God has set them apart in Christ.
  2. Blessing bestowed God's saving purpose begins in eternity, choosing believers in Christ for holiness and predestining them for adoption according to His pleasure and grace.
  3. Redemption accomplished Through Christ's blood believers receive redemption and forgiveness, and God's once-hidden purpose is revealed: to bring unity to all things in Christ.
  4. Inheritance secured Believers are included in Christ, marked with the promised Holy Spirit, and given the Spirit as a deposit guaranteeing the inheritance until final redemption.
  5. Comprehension requested Paul prays not merely for more information but for Spirit-given perception so believers can understand the hope, riches, and power already theirs in Christ.
  6. Supremacy displayed The same power at work in believers is displayed in Christ's resurrection and exaltation, proving His authority above every power and His headship over the church.
Crucial Turning Point

Paul blesses God for every spiritual blessing in Christ, then prays that believers would know the hope, inheritance, and power already given to them through Christ's exaltation.

Paul argues that believers must understand their identity and calling from God's eternal purpose in Christ before they can live faithfully as the church. The Christian life begins with doxology because salvation is God's work from beginning to end.

Theological logic
  1. God is worthy of praise because every spiritual blessing is given in Christ.
  2. God's saving purpose is rooted in his eternal will and gracious pleasure.
  3. Redemption and forgiveness come through the blood of Christ.
  4. God's revealed purpose is to bring unity to all things under Christ.
  5. The Spirit seals believers and guarantees their inheritance.
  6. Believers need spiritual perception to know what God has already given.
  7. Christ's exaltation secures the church's confidence and identity.
Watch Out
  • Do not define God's power toward believers as guaranteed comfort, prosperity, or immediate circumstantial success; Paul defines it by Christ's resurrection and exaltation.
  • Do not treat Christ's reign as merely future; the passage says God seated Him at His right hand and placed all things under His feet.
  • Do not treat spiritual powers as equal rivals to Christ; He is far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion, and name.
  • Do not separate Christ's headship over the church from His headship over all things; the One given to the church is the One who reigns universally.
  • Do not reduce the church to an institution, event, brand, or voluntary club; Paul calls it Christ's body.
  • Do not use the church's identity as Christ's fullness to inflate human pride; the fullness belongs to Christ, who fills everything in every way.
  • Do not detach this passage from Ephesians 1:15-19; it explains the power Paul prays believers would know.
  • Do not detach this passage from Ephesians 2:1-10; the power that raised Christ is the power by which God makes dead sinners alive with Christ.
  • Do not turn Christ's headship into harsh domination modeled after fallen human authority; His headship is saving, life-giving, protective, and holy.
  • Do not define God's power apart from Christ's resurrection and exaltation; Paul gives the measure of divine power in Christ.
  • Do not treat Christ's rule as merely future; He is already seated at God's right hand above every power.
  • Do not reduce Christ's headship to church administration only; He is head over all things for the church.
  • Do not make spiritual powers equal rivals to Christ; they are beneath Him in authority.
  • Do not treat the church as a voluntary human club or social organization; it is Christ's body.
  • Do not interpret the church as completing a deficiency in Christ; the fullness language must be handled in a way that preserves Christ's sufficiency, supremacy, and gracious relationship to His body.
Invitation Arc
  • Believers should measure God's power by the resurrection and exaltation of Christ, not by visible circumstances.
  • The church can endure weakness and opposition because Christ is already seated above every power.
  • Spiritual warfare must begin with Christ's victory and supremacy, not with fear of hostile powers.
  • Church identity must be shaped by union with Christ as His body under His living headship.
  • Pastoral ministry must resist treating the church as a mere institution, since Paul calls it Christ's body and fullness.
  • Christ's headship over all things gives confidence that the church's future is governed by His authority, not by earthly instability.
Response
  • Bless God intentionally for specific spiritual blessings named in the chapter.
  • Pray Paul's prayer for the congregation, family, or discipleship group.
  • Teach believers to name their identity from the text: chosen, adopted, redeemed, forgiven, included, sealed, and called.
  • Use the chapter to counsel believers struggling with shame, fear, spiritual insecurity, or distorted self-understanding.
  • Connect church membership and body life to Christ's headship rather than preference or convenience.
Formation Aim

Humble assurance, worshipful gratitude, holy identity, spiritual perception, and confidence under Christ's reign.

Gospel Clarity

The gospel proclaims not only that Christ died for sins but that God raised Him from the dead and enthroned Him over all creation. The One who redeemed His people by His blood now reigns above every power and rules as head for His church. Believers therefore live under the authority, protection, and life-giving fullness of the risen Christ.
